In September, rising jazz sensation Makaya McCraven will release a new album comprised entirely of new, original material and today he's shared the first single, "Seventh String."
For the past few years, Makaya McCraven has released a wondrous outpour of material that celebrates jazz's past while fusing it with the present. He's breathed new life into old Blue Note tunes, remixed a still relatively new Gil Scott-Heron album, and compiled a lot of live material that he's reconstructed and made new again on record. This fall, however, he's set to release something he's been striving to achieve for quite some time, a new album called In These Times. According to a press release, "this is the album McCraven's been trying to make since he started making records. And his patience, ambition, and persistence have yielded an appropriately career-defining body of work." Over steady, but propulsive rhythms, lead single "Seventh String" finds fluttering woodwinds gracing the track to give it a sense of levitating beauty in addition to sparkling guitars and warm synths. For a musician who has already given so much in such little time, it's remarkable to hear just how far his creative genius extends and what else this record may contain. This is the sound of artist finding their sound and exploring every crevice along the way, making sure no detail is left unnoticed and that their true vision sees the light of day. It's the sound of a genius finding their perfect stroke.
In These Times is out September 23 via International Anthem.
