Widowspeak - "True Believer"

Despite just releasing their great sophomore record this past winter, the incendiary Widowspeak will release a six song EP entitled The Swamps, on October 29 via Captured Tracks. "True Believer" is a perfect breezy summer jam that follows the more sepia-toned, twee vibes of Almanac.

Widowspeak played Mercury Lounge

For the release of their second full-length, Almanac, Brooklyn's Widowspeak descended upon Manhattan's Mercury Lounge for an intimate performance of their latest bout with greatness. Highlighting tracks from the new album, Molly Hamilton and company unleashed breath-taking renditions of their classic style of breathy vocals and dream inducing guitar riffs. New tracks "Dyed in the Wool", "Storm King" and the live debut of "Thick as Thieves" were coated in heavy reverb, probably indebted to a mix of Television style guitars with the cries of Fleetwood Mac, and the compact sound of "The Dark Age' exploded with shoegaze power that spoke volumes about the song's magnitude and the band's songwriting capabilities. Older tracks "In the Pines" and the forever gorgeous "Gun Shy" were particular triumphs of the evening and while the newer tunes don't necessarily bring the group to a new level, there are always certain tracks that will leave one breathless. At this point, it seems irrelevant to mention the obvious influence of Mazzy Star, however even the Galaxie 500 inspiration is quite apparent through the group's hazed instrumentation. Seeing the band transform from a three-piece, to a four-piece, to tonight's quintet, has been a true pleasure as the band's aesthetic has truly erupted over the past few years. Their take on modern dream-pop is clearly in a class of their own. Despite the still noticeable stage fright of Molly, the group shimmers in their own glow of sun-soaked euphoria. Their encore was the lone "Harsh Realm" which welcomed even more praise from the hometown showcase (cries for Molly were forever abundant) and a bashful thank you brought the evening to an end.

Widowspeak played Glasslands

Retro dream-pop sensations Widowspeak packed Glasslands last night for a hometown thriller and expanded their lineup to four, as they were joined by bass played Pamela Garavano-Coolbaugh, and oozed their way through a great set of soft, slow burning songs. The always gorgeous Molly Hamilton led the quintet with her forever compared Hope Sandoval-esque voice and ethereal guitar tones that should really be exemplified for their true unique beauty. Despite Glasslands' soft tones, the band was still able to propel beauty and grace through their elegant tracks of blissful guitar melodies and simple rhythms. Favorites from their debut record "In the Pines" and "Puritan" were paired with world debuting new tracks that retain the same poised allure that makes the band so endearing. With full smiles in tact throughout the show, the band's pure joy easily transfered to the mesmerized crowd and set a euphoric tone for the entire evening. The group's charm is the heart of what they do as their tracks are not overly complex and Hamilton's voice can sometimes seem to be barely above a whisper, yet it is the delicate finesse that makes the tracks worth coming back to for repeated listens. "Harsh Realm" closed out the evening of fantastic celestial tunes as the band bashfully thanked all for coming.

Widowspeak played Knitting Factory

Roughly a month and a half after releasing their self-titled debut album, Dream-Pop trio Widowspeak finished up their run with Vivian Girls last night with a hometown show in Brooklyn. Molly Hamilton delivered sultry vocals, which have gained plenty of Mazzy Star comparisons, that shone through dueling guitar work and displayed nods to both Phil Spector inspired pop reincarnations, much like Tennis, and the oozing and graceful guitar strokes of Beach House. Up tempo numbers such their debut single as "Gun Shy" got the audience to move and a mid set cover of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" got plenty cheers. The band continued to thank their friends for the support and remarked on how excited they were to be back in home. The group's simplistic approach to their particular style of celestial pop still left plenty of room for letting loose on stage and the band was able to give everything an extra push, highlighting anything that could have been lost on the record.
