Who would’ve thought that in the year that Harry Styles would hit #1 on the charts five different times all with the best sounding Strokes song in a decade, Beyoncé would make her lavish return with extraterrestrial splendor, Panda Bear would go the distance on guest features for quite possibly his most prolific year yet, Kendrick would take a dramatic look inward for some of his most uncomfortable moments in his career, Alvvays would leave their mark on a genre, and somehow despite all of that, Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” would be the unlikely runaway as the song of the year. There were times when it almost seemed impossible to keep up with the hottest new song and even now I'm sure there are some I'll discover in the months to come, but after listening to over 8,000 songs this year, these were the new ones that I had on repeat. From R&B to noise-rock, country to jazz, and loads in between, these tracks are the ones that soundtracked the best memories, made for the best live experiences, and generally brought moments of clarity in another year of chaos.
