Tierra Whack - Pop? EP

Tierra Whack has dropped her second EP in as many weeks. This one is called Pop? and it's her strongest work of the year.

Kicking off with a beat that is reminiscent of Outkast's landmark "B.O.B." Tierra wastes no time on her latest EP (and that's good since the whole thing clocks in at under 9 minutes) and hits the ground running. Her flow is strong, serious, but also fun. This is Tierra sounding almost playful while still delivering her impactful message. The new directions here are a surprise for sure, but very welcomed. Her method has always been to hit the audience so fast it's almost over as soon as it begins (her first and so far only full-length was just 15 songs in 15 minutes) and that is still the case here, but once we move past the southern-rap stylings of "Body of Water" we're blasted with a left-field guitar hook on "Lazy" that was inspired by Jack Black's School of Rock (one of Whack's favorite films) before "Dolly" gives us a banjo riff. We've never heard Tierra push herself so far out of her comfort zone and these are certainly pop-ready bangers that reveal a whole new side of the rapper. Hopefully this is the start of something new that she continues to explore on her next set of songs, but it also establishes that she's one of the most innovative rappers in the game and we should be excited for whatever she does next, regardless of the genre name she slaps on the cover.

Pop? is out now!
