Rilo Kiley played Pier 17

Indie Rock icons Rilo Kiley are back together again and their show at Pier 17 under a nearly-full moon made for a really special evening.

If you're of a certain age, the nostalgia factor for a Rilo Kiley show might be off the charts. With more of an emphasis on Rock and less so on Emo, the band led by Jenny Lewis has probably gotten lumped in with a plethora of other groups that came up in the mid-aughts and appealed to teens in touch with their feelings, and while their tracks can still strike that chord, there's more to their licks and catchy choruses than meets the eye and their return is most welcomed. As the original line-up hit the stage, they dove right into "The Execution of All Things" and instantly began the journey towards early Millennium throwbacks that had the crowd in a chokehold for the remainder of the night. Tightly locked in, their delicate hooks were light and breezy and perfectly pinned under Jenny Lewis' mighty vocals. Every track felt like a sing a long moment. "The Moneymaker" turned things up with the angular guitar riff giving everyone the opportunity to cut a little loose and groove hard with the thumping beat. Strutting around the stage, Lewis made it feel like an intimate night where everyone was the star and Blake Sennett made should to chime in to add how thankful he was that everyone still came out to see the band. With their steady rhythms and playful choruses, it was a sensational night to feel alive amongst friends as the band's lovely tunes floated effortlessly against the stunning backdrop of the New York City skyline. Pausing to reflect on the gorgeous pink moon overhead, Lewis also was caught up in the moment and it made for an extra touching affair. When they broke out the acoustic guitar and led the entire crowd through an epic rendition of "With Arms Outstretched," the entire venue followed along and raised their hands in the air, nearly everyone singing back to the band in perfect unison to capture the tear-jerking moment and break out the sentimental vibes. Of course "A Better Son/Daughter" was another emotional track that really hit hard in the feelings and once again the band had the crowd in the palms of their hands. Blake Sennett chimed in once again to add how beautiful he thought the moment was and how great it was to hear everyone still singing these songs back to the band after all these years away. Closing the main set with "Portions for Foxes," the band really dug deep and stretched out the jam with unbridled enthusiasm, following to the floor as they strummed away and kept the energy of the crowd in close command. For those who'd been waiting and wondering if this moment would ever return, it was a true delight and absolute pleasure to be able to hear these songs again and the band couldn't have looked happier to be reliving these moments right along with their fans.
