Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band played Radio City Music Hall

After having to cancel his New York show last year, Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band packed Radio City on Friday for a night of timeless hits.

As he's been doing for decades, Ringo Starr has assembled his latest rendition of his All Starr band to back him up and play their own hits and on Friday night, they lit up Radio City for nearly two hours of classic rock hits. Joined by long-time All Starrs Steve Lukather of Toto, Hamish Stuart of Average White Band, and Colin Hay of Men at Work, the band took turns highlighting their own careers as Ringo would take a back seat on his drum kit to share the spotlight with his friends which made for an evening that played out like a greatest hits concert. Ringo ran out on stage and immediately hit the dance moves as he laid into his classic cover of Carl Perkins' "Honey Don't" before bouncing into "It Don't Come Easy" which had the crowd bopping along with bushy-eyed endearment. Passing the torch to Lukather, the band struck up the classic Toto track "Roxanna" and people kept on their feet to shuffle to the yacht rock hit. Throwing it over to Hamish Smith, the instrumental boogie of "Pick Up the Pieces" brought more delight to the night and it was followed by the Men at Work smash "Down Under." All in just in a few songs, the range of hits had the whole building jamming along, but of course nothing matched the energy like when Ringo would hit us with "Yellow Submarine" of "Octopus's Garden," perhaps the two biggest tracks of the night that had Beatlemania powering on in full effect. Playing the drums and singing lead vocals is a difficult task for most no matter what age, but at 84 Ringo makes it look as easy as ever and even when he was just on lead vocals, he was still dancing along like he's been doing for sixty years, making his youth still shine through with brilliant appeal. While it was the Beatles' hits that had the room rocking the hardest, when Lukather whipped out Toto's smash "Africa," the crowd was ready to let loose to one of the best bad songs of all time. "This one is for the ladies" Ringo cheered before the early Beatles favorite "I Wanna Be Your Man" and the screams from the crowd were enough to make you understand that for some, the love for one of the fab four never truly goes away. All throughout the night, people in the crowd would call out "I love you Ringo" and the abundance of peace signs were also a fun reminder of the devotion that the fans have for the drummer of the most famous band of the past century. At this point, I've seen Ringo in four different decades and even as the shows age, the excitement to see the famous Ringo never dulls. In fact, it only grows over time. Thanks for keeping the All-Starrs on the road Ringo.
