Let's just get this out of the way: this song, sadly, has nothing to do with Judy Garland, Barbara Streisand, or Lady Gaga. While you may have been hoping that these underground titans of noise may have secretly been working on some kind of tribute to the film of the same name there's really nothing about the new song "A Star is Born" that sounds remotely like one from the film. Instead, we have guitarist Bill Orcutt (of Harry Pussy), drummer Steve Shelley (of Sonic Youth), and bassist Ethan Miller (of Howlin' Rain and Comets on Fire) coming together for a brilliant noise jam of epic proportions. Pulling from their collective no wave backgrounds, this is a seething tune that hits with an electric scorch from Orcutt's mighty guitar and it maneuvers its way over Shelly's primordial beat making and Miller's elusive bass. It's an instrumental jam that is cranked full of power and tenacity that is both intense, but also relatively welcoming. While this new trio may be one for the heads, the music isn't as polarizing as you may guess and in fact does wonders to draw you in to their metallic and dissonant sound.
