As Blue Lake, Jason Dungan has produced great work that blends orchestral chamber music with hints of ambient textures and jazz arrangements for some rather engaging and at times exquisite results. Today, he announced an album entitled Routine that's a collaboration with Johan Carøe and it carries on a lot of those buzzing components for another enthralling piece. Our first taste, "Routine I" brings together woodwinds and striking strings that makes for a hypnotic composition that slowly whirls into a dizzying array of lush electronics. When announcing the album, Dungan shared the following:
The record started a little while ago with some ideas recorded by Johan, which he passed over to me. I started adding and developing the pieces, and we went back and forth over a period of time, patiently working on the music and listening to it take shape. It was an unhurried process guided by curiosity and a sense of exploration. The music is made from zither, guitar, cello, synths, acoustic and electronic percussion, and woodwinds. Although Johan and I both live in Copenhagen, we tended to work on it solo, each of us growing and expanding the music and then sharing it to each other. At some point, we realized it was a record.
It's a compelling and stirring piece that finds beauty in repetition and rhythms that blossom organically, each layer unfolding with new wonder and converging into something that exemplifies total grace like a true musical delicacy.
Routine is out September 25.
