The hard rocking trio of J Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph only made it through three full-lengths on their initial run before things imploded and the band famously began to feud. In 2005, an unlikely reunion was announced and it didn't just lead to a new album, but rather it ushered in an era that has now outlasted their original run both in terms of number of years, but also albums. It's also one of the very rare occasions where the second incarnation may be better than the first. There Near is set to be the band's thirteenth LP (ninth featuring their core line-up) and the lead single "Several Got Away" finds them sounding as classic as ever, almost as if this tune could've come from any point in their career. That's not to say it sounds repeated or stale, but rather that Dino has been so good for so long, they've never need to change the formula that's worked for them since the beginning. Sure, things sound a little cleaner, a little tighter, and a tad more polished than things did on their debut or even their landmark album You're Living All Over Me, but by the time the band clears the way for J to launch into his fantastic as always solo, he lets it rip in a way that makes you hope he'll keep doing this forever and always have Lou and Murph by his side. Never change Dinosaur and please keep making the hits.
There Near is out August 28.
