Robyn played Brooklyn Paramount

After releasing her excellent new single "Dopamine" in November, Robyn decided throw a party for New Year's Eve in Brooklyn, marking only her second full concert since 2019.

The tricky things about a New Year's Eve show, is trying to figure out when things will exactly start and after it was announced that Robyn would be making an appearance in Times Sq before making it to Brooklyn, you knew this would be a late one. Luckily Olof Dreijer held things down on the decks and after Robyn dashed on stage to countdown to midnight, Olof threw on some wonderful techno and house music that kicked things off with his remix of Björk and Rosalía's scrumptous "Oral" and by the end had he us grooving to "Silent Shout" from his seminal project with his sibling Fever Ray. Naturally, when it was time for our beloved queen to finally take the stage, emotions were high and as the twinkling piano lick of "Missing U" began to percolate, things reached a fever pitch. That feeling was dashed almost instantly though as about halfway through the song, the house lights shone down and the audio cut, leaving everyone in an utterly confused state. For roughly fifteen minutes everyone stood around perplexed at the situation before the lights finally dimmed again and the band eventually made their way back to the stage to pick up right where they were cut off. Instantly, they hype returned, perhaps even more powerful than before after our hopes were nearly dashed while at a real peek, but as those disco synths layered on top of each other, the bliss was in full effect and as she shifted it into "Call Your Girlfriend," the place nearly exploded. Twirling lights and hyper-pop maximalism blended with glitchy electronics for an absolute banger and an absolute highlight of a one-two punch to start the show. "Be Mine!" cooled things down a touch, but "Cobrastyle" had people grooving hard and ready to dance the night away. Squeezing in her blissful hits, "Ever Again" was a softer tune that elicited a rapturous response from the crowd, its shuffling beat an infectious groove that ran throughout the building that launched perfectly into the new classic, "Dopamine." Hitting that perfect Robyn sweet spot, it sounds even better in the middle of her set than it does on its own, a perfect torch carrier that could be from no one else and reinvigorated the crowd to kick us into the back half of the set. Grooving right into "Honey," another slick and sensuous jam, the string of hits was a total wonder and a perfect way to introduce a new song called "Talk to Me" which got its debut in front of the sold out crowd. After slaying us with her pure pop prowess, Robyn dug more into her club vibe and hit us with "Love is Free" and a great remix of "Don't Fucking Tell Me What to Do" that really went hard on the beats and rave ready tendencies. Capping it off with "Life," her collaboration with Jamie xx, was a killer way to really bring the moment to critical mass as the dance floor came alive with energy that made it feel like the night would never end. Making her way back to the stage, "Indestructible" took things back towards her poppier side and was the perfect set-up for her to crush us with "Show Me Love" for the first time since 2013. With nearly just a hum behind her, Robyn crooned an almost acapella version of the '90s pop classic and it left the entire room stunned. Watching with baited breath it was a surreal moment as the entire crowd joined together in near silence to take it all in. Shaking off the state of shock came quickly as the intro to "Dancing On My Own" hit and the room shot back to life with pure adrenaline. The millennial dance pop anthem carried out in true perfection as every person in attendance felt the thrill of the song take over the room. This time the band intentionally cut the sound and let the crowd sing the chorus in unison with the full house lights on, a beautiful and communal moment that felt absolutely perfect before crashing back in with those pounding drums to carry us into the night. The excitement around New Year's Eve can often never live up to the expectations, but Robyn made sure that would not be the case for everyone at Brooklyn Paramount and it's hard to think of how it could've been any better.
