The rumors around a new album from Swedish pop icon Robyn started to swirl at the end of last summer when her long-time collaborator Klas Åhlund announced that they had just wrapped working on a new record together. Then in November came "Dopamine," her first new single in years. It was classic Robyn, her sequined splendor radiating from those shimmering keys in a way we've come to love oh so well. Then there were two concerts in Brooklyn (one on New Year's Eve) where she debuted two more new songs. Today she has shared studio recordings of those tracks and announced her new album, Sexistential, will drop at the end of March. If there's one thing we can tell from this record, based on not only the context of the new tracks, but the album artwork as well, is that Robyn is feeling herself on this one and she's ready to let out all of her sensual inhibitions. First up we have "Talk to Me" which finds Robyn reuniting with another Swedish maximal pop star in Max Martin for the first time since 2010 and this is another banging dance track that feels rooted in 2010s synth-pop bliss, more sparkling keys and synthetic drums that fill the room with disco pleasure. It's another grooving track that builds with stuttering drums and laser-sharp keys, pulling out all the stops you'd expect from such a collaboration. "Sexistential" on the other hand finds Robyn in rap-mode(?) as she hits us with bars about IVF and still feeling horny as ever. There's an amazing line about her getting a boner to Adam Driver and someone mixing it up with Adam Sandler and I swear it's not corny. Apparently inspired by André 3000's claim that he has nothing to rap about at his age because no one wants to hear about him getting a colonoscopy, Robyn took this as her opportunity to rap about having a baby, talking to her doctor, and where she finds sensual pleasure at this stage of her life. It's an unexpected move and not the exact Robyn track you're waiting for, but it's a bold move, serves the clubby vibes, and it's one that really proves Robyn is up for the task. Whatever the vibe of the album, it's clear that Robyn is ready to get loose and enjoy herself. Buckle-up, everyone, it's officially Robyn season and we are so back.
Sexistential is out March 27.
