Joshua Idehen first popped onto my radar when a friend played me his track "Mum Does the Washing," a spoken-word number that immediately had me hooked. His singular sound really grabbed hold and became lodged in my brain. Ever since he announced his debut album, he's shared more dance-forward tracks and today he's back with another groovy tune. "This Is the Place" opens with some random quotes from folks describing their sense of happiness and how they find hope before a clubby beat kicks in and Ibehen takes us "traveling at the speed of bass." Speeding up the sample of "the rhythm and the love" pushes the track forward, inching towards classic house vibes and breezy techno. There's more of his spoken word delivery that pops up in the middle that could be taken as corny if heard in the wrong context, but here it magnifies the joy that radiates throughout the song. It's compelling and jubilant, a respite of something positive at a time when we might need it the most in recent memory.
I Know You’re Hurting, Everyone Is Hurting, Everyone Is Trying, You Have Got To Try is out March 6.
