The Messthetics / James Brandon Lewis - "Gestation"

James Brandon Lewis and The Messthetics have teamed-up once again for a new record and they've shared the first single, "Gestation."

Back in 2024, jazz musician James Brandon Lewis linked up with the Messthetics, a punk trio featuring the rhythm section of luminary hardcore act Fugazi for a record aptly titled James Brandon Lewis and The Messthetics. Now, they've hooked-up once again for a new album and this one is called Deface the Currency and the lead single, "Gestation," picks up right where you'd expect. Featuring free flowing lyrical phrasing from Lewis on saxophone and matched with crashing drums and striking guitar riffs, it's a jazz-punk instrumental that roars with life and hits with influences from across their shared musical spectrum. When Lewis spoke about the record, he remarked "the more you know someone, the better the relationship is, the more enriched it becomes. It’s like a cast-iron skillet: The more you keep cooking in it, the better the food gets. So I think that’s what you hear on the record, and you hear an urgency of now." It certainly does seem to be the case with "Gestation" as both guitar and saxophone solos rage while ragged percussion and rooted bass hold their ground.

Deface the Currency is out February 20.
