Sunn O))) - "Glory Black"

Sunn O))) have announced a new, self-titled, album for Sub Pop and shared the expectedly heavy lead single, "Glory Black."

If you know anyone who has ever been to a Sunn O))) show, it's likely that they told you the show was loud. And not just loud, but probably the loudest show that they've ever seen. I am one of those people. Now, what you might be thinking when you hear about a loud metal band is that it's also probably a physical and perhaps even scary with lots of people moshing and raging hard as blast beats and pummeling guitar melt your face. This isn't exactly the case for Sunn O))) and it's highlighted by their great new track, the smoldering epic called "Glory Black." For roughly ten and a half minutes the metal drone duo conjure up the sounds of roaring intensity. It's slow, crushing, and full of absolute power. Riffs echo and things chug along at ear-splitting volume and if you're listening to this track on your built-in laptop speakers or ear pods, you're doing yourself a disservice. Turn the lights down, clear your mind, and turn your speakers up to 11 as you allow the track to wash over you in all of it's infinite glory. This is a song that tests you and pushes you to the limits, it's sonic overdrive that could easily send you into a tailspin. Still, the song isn't attacking or violent, its steady power is part of the magic as it slowly engrosses you and takes hold. It's minimal metal, in a sense, which is why it's incredible that they were able to license a Mark Rothko art piece for the album's cover. Bold, striking, and utterly intense while doing so much with so little.

Sunn O))) is out April 3.
