The Flaming Lips - "God Will Control the Werewolves"

The Flaming Lips have announced their first new studio album since 2019 and shared the lead single, "God Will Control the Werewolves."

In January, The Flaming Lips will release a new album called The Teardrop Throbs. It will be their first album since 1990 not released on their former label Warner (they just signed to Jack White's Third Man Records) and their first since 1992 without long-time member Steven Drodz. While frontman Wayne Coyne still insists that Drozd left the band on his own, Drozd still upholds that it was his choice to enter rehab that made Coyne decide to move on without him (a pretty shitty thing to do I must say). Throughout their career as a band, Drozd was an imperative part of their sound and on their first single, it's hard to admit that Coyne and the rest of the group have found ways to keep their sonic stylings intact even without a foundational player. The track definitely fits more into their sonic cannon from the late '90s (The Soft Bulletin) through the early aughts (At War with the Mystics) with its airy tones and sweeping strings that really lift the song in a swirl of lite-psychedlia.

The Teardrop Throbs is out January 22.
