In 2022, Sam Prekop (lead singer for The Sea and Cake) released his solo album The Sparrow as well as a joint collaboration with John McEntire (also a member of The Sea and Cake) called Sons Of. Both are great and records you should be sure to check out. This year, he's back with a new solo record and he's enlisted McEntire to engineer it. This one also seems like it'll be one you'll want to surely check out. Open Close continues Prekop's stellar run of modular synth music that buzzes with distilled electronic wonder for something illuminating and expansive. There are steady rhythms here and the textured synths give it life, creating a heady sonic experiment that begs you to get lost in the shuffle. If you've ever posed the question "how can electronic music not be dance music?" this is a great example of how a song can still be trance-inducing, but not give way to hard, grooving rhythms that make you move your feet. Prekop has described the song as "a sprawling electronic metropolis" and while you could apply that to nearly all of his solo work, it surely fits here as well and getting lost in the grooves feels like the most natural response.
Open Close is out September 26.
