Agriculture - "Bodhidharma"

Agriculture have announced a new album, The Spiritual Sound, and shared the menacing lead single "Bodhidharma."

Blackgaze band Agriculture know how to make things heavy. Mixing the intensity of black metal with the crushing effects of shoegaze, the band can create towering behemoths and their latest single, "Bodhidharma," is a prime example. At nearly six and a half minutes, the song takes us on a journey featuring punishing riffs, wicked howls, and serene-like breakdowns that provide some respite along the way. It's a blistering tune that kicks off with classic black metal riffs before making swift turns towards near silence except for those bleak screams and continues on the path of those peaks and valleys before it lands on an absolutely killer guitar solo that brings about some psychedelic moments without losing any of its brutal trademarks. This one is an absolute monster and surely a great sign of what's to come from their new album. "Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, was an Indian monk who famously stared at the wall of a cave for nine years," the band has said. They continued with:

He even cut off his eyelids in order to prevent himself from falling asleep. At one time, another monk approached him in his cave and pleaded “master, my head is on fire with anxiety, can you pacify my mind?” Bodhidharma just kept staring at the wall and Huike waited outside of the cave all night until he was buried in snow up to his waist. Finally, as a gesture of desperation he cut off his arm and offered it to the great master. Huike later became Bodhidharma’s successor.

I'm not sure it gets more metal than that.

The Spiritual Sound is out on October 3.
