Snail Mail - "Ben Franklin"

Lindsey Jordan is back with her second single from Snail Mail's upcoming record, Valentine, due in November.

"I wanted to sonically and lyrically get out of my comfort zone with 'Ben Franklin.' It felt only right that the visual accompaniment should include dancing in front of a camera and holding a 10-foot snake close to my face." On her new album, which was written in 2019 and 2020, Jordan pushes her limits and finds a new version of herself through her songwriting. "I wanted to take as much time as possible with this record to make sure I was happy with every detail before unleashing it unto y'all," she said in a statement. "Referring to the process as the deepest level of catharsis and therapy I have ever experienced would be a huge understatement. Valentine is my child!" This track follows a more mellow vibe (sonically) and less guitar crunch than the title track, giving synths a more prominent sound this go around. As expected, it's also an open and honest track that briefly mentions Jordan's own stint in rehab, continuing her streak of exposing vulnerabilities with extreme bravery. Exposing yourself is never easy and putting yourself front and center can sometimes come with a certain price. For us, Jordan exposes her own heartbreak and other difficult moments with a graceful, confident demeanor. On "Ben Franklin," she indeed breaks out of her comfort zone and does so with true force.

Valentine is out November 5 via Matador.
