nasimiYu - "Watercolor"

nasimiYu has announced her first solo album in seven years. "Watercolor" is the lead single from her new record, P O T I O N S, which due this May.

Written and recorded entirely as a solo project in her Brooklyn apartment during quarantine, nasimiYu makes effervescent, vibrant tunes that take on electro-pop and afro-punk and fuses sounds of electronics and acoustic instruments into a style distinctly her own. There are plenty of DIY aesthetics on this one, mostly in terms of creativeness and inventions of new sounds, but the final result is a polished work of art. Elements of Tune-Yards, Björk, and Solange are present here, but still nasimiYu pushes past those boundaries and introduces us to her own world of sonic pleasures. When she hits the groove, it's damn near impossible to not smile and move along to the repeated "in my feelings," a phrase and melody that are sure to get stuck in your head.

In a statement on the new song, nasimiYu shared that "'Watercolor' is about a psychedelic awakening. It’s about that tender place of vulnerability that’s always hiding behind our outer shell. The song is a celebration of how much bravery it takes to shed our armor and to choose to live in our softness. 'Watercolor'  is about letting myself get all the way to the other side of a good cry, and finding complete elation on the other side. Crying as cleansing. Taking an “inner shower. This song is about being the opposite cool, the opposite of nonchalant. It’s about allowing yourself to be as fully human as you can be. Bursting open with every color of the emotional spectrum all at once."

P O T I O N S is out May 7.
