Unless you've been avoiding the internet for the summer (and if so, honestly good for you), you're aware of Olivia Rodrigo's triumphant new record. The album showcases her post-punk and indie rock interests to a new degree and has drawn comparisons from the hallmarks of '90s alternative as well. Today she dropped a new standalone single that was recorded during the same sessions as her new LP, but kept from the final cut. "serena joy," named for the character in The Handmaid's Tale, has more of an early aughts garage rock revival feel to it with nods to dance-punk drums and electro clash synths, but still fits into the new wave atmosphere she's created and acts like a cherry on top. It also makes you really wonder what could have come from those collaboration sessions between James Murphy and Britney Spears. At the moment, there's no one really rivaling what Rodrigo is bringing to the game, an undeniable sense of taste and she's armed herself with musical history knowledge ready to take on anyone who tries to come take her spot as the best pop star on the planet.
