Robyn - "Dopamine"

Robyn returns with "Dopamine," her first new song in seven years!

If there's one thing we've come to know about Robyn, it's that she certainly is reliable. Well, at least sonically. While we might wait for what feels like ages between her releases, when she does come back, we know what we're gonna get and thankfully, it's just what we need: percolating synths, a disco rhythm, and a whole lotta sparkle. There are hints of "Missing U" and "Call Your Girlfriend" here, but this isn't a retread, it's an evolution. At this point, that twinkling piano riff feels like it's part of her musical DNA, it's almost to be expected and it's nearly her calling card. When you hear it, you know what's coming next. The shimmer remains throughout and processed vocals begin to repeat the title as things move ahead pulling you to the dance floor. Suddenly, those big, rubbery beats hit and things pick up. The build-up subtly recalls the beats of "Dancing On My Own," but again, this isn't a remake. Robyn teamed-up with past collaborator Klas Åhlund who worked on four of the tracks from her last record, 2018's Honey, and it becomes clear that this is Robyn in her comfort zone. However, where others might take things easy when in this mode, Robyn still works the angle. When the beat drops, it's like the sound of a million disco balls warming up, radient in the light, and sparkling across the floor. Robyn might not take big risks on this one, but it's clear she doesn't need to at this point. She knows her formula and she knows how to work out those slight variations to make things still sound fresh and exciting.
