When they debuted their music earlier this year, the duo of Crystal Sting described their sound as cephalopod funk, a fitting descriptor when one of your songs is called "Octopus Jam." Embedding shimmering hooks into their love for early IDM beats, their tracks recalled early works of Four Tet and more of the longing grooves from Boards of Canada, but injected with dabs of funk and digital love. As the year winds down, Crystal Sting has dropped another new track that trades those hearty helpings of bleating beats for a country twang. Chopping up an acoustic guitar riff and running it through some delays and processors, the track still carries that wistful drone, but the bright and joyful tones from the guitar are what give the song its charm. When it borders too closely to some stomp/clap cheese, it knowingly steers towards something more thought provoking and enchanting. The bubbly nature still incites hits of bliss, nods of euphoria, and smile engaging harmony.
