Over the past two few years, Dawn Richard has expanded her sonic palette beyond her expected R&B jams and forayed into more ambient and jazz-adjacent work, notably working with Spencer Zahn on some excellent albums. Jospeh Shabason played saxophone on tour with Zahn and Richard in addition to also releasing his own solo work. On tour, Shabason would often warm up by playing his own piece "Broken Hearted Kota" and Dawn would occasionally join him by singing Sade lyrics over his work. Luckily for the rest of us, the two realized how great this collaboration was and Dawn laid down proper vocal takes singing lyrics from "No Ordinary Love," "Cherish the Day," and "Is It a Crime" and Shabason set it properly to music. The result is a serene and touching ode to the icon as well as a full realization of how the original music can be reworked in such a personal and detailed fashion, equally paying tribute while also taking on a new meaning of its own.
