While many of us may be hoping and praying for a Sonic Youth reunion that may never happen (although what was with those washing machine memes dated 2026 they posted last year? Hopefully not just a tease for their upcoming Record Store Day release), Kim Gordon's solo outputs have been pretty stellar and worthy of attention. It looks like she'll continue that streak next month when she drops her third solo album Play Me based on the most recent singles. After sharing the smeared-out tune "Not Today," Gordon is back with another killer track that once again hones in on stuttering trap beats and icy piano riffs all while she explores the dystopia associated with AI. In a press release, Gordon stated, "I was kind of musing about, is my next boss going to be an AI chatbot? We're the first ones whose lights are going to go out — not the tech billionaires. It's so abstract that people can't comprehend." Her spoken word delivery sounds even more focused and dialed-in here, sharpened and to the point. Gordon has never been one to mess around and even in her '70s, the ultra queen of cool sounds as determined as ever to shake things up and speak out against the man and the machine.
Play Me is out March 13.
