Tortoise will release their new album,
Touch, in October and today they shared the groovy third single, "Works and Days."
There was a point in the '90s when the term Post-Rock was being affixed to bands that played guitar, bass, and drums, but didn't make music you'd typically equate with those instruments. Perhaps no one did it better than Chicago's Tortoise who fused together jazz grooves with electronics to create something that rocked, but didn't necessarily rock. Over time, the genre would turn into a sound that found bands making music that would go from quiet to loud to quiet with almighty force. Tortoise never made that kind of Post-Rock and on their first album in nine years, they're still sticking to what they do best. The third single from their upcoming album is another instrumental track that waltzes along a delicate Jazz groove. Jeff Parker's notable guitar intersecting with the varying rhythm while the rest of the band loosely follows his meandering lead. Tortoise never made quite the same kind of music as a lot of their peers and decades into their career they're still proving that they don't need to follow anyone else. They are one band under a groove all of their own.
Touch is out October 24.
