We are less than a month away from a new album from Iceage and it's their first in five years. Today the band shared the propulsive third single "The Weak" which explodes from the jump and keeps the energy at a high velocity. As noted, Iceage have been upping the swagger and cow-punk twang on their more recent albums and this one seems to take the cake. It's almost a giddy number with these high flying hooks and it's gotta be the first Iceage song to feature a flute solo. None of this takes away from the righteousness that abounds throughout the song and it's probably the most urgent song we've heard from the album yet. Even when the music seems to joyful at least in terms of a rousing melody, Rønnenfelt's lyrics like "life is for the weak" as well as "not one of these pricks is a friend of mine/ Yeah, I’ve had it with peace times/ I found a new home in war crime," certainly help bring down the mood and realign with the band's usual brooding darkness. It's hard to feel optimistic these days and Iceage are making music for the times.
For Love of Grace & Thereafter is out May 29.
