New Zealand's The Beths have released three excellent records and it seems like their fourth could be on the way. The last we heard from the group was 2022's wonderful Experts in a Dying Field, and while there's no official word on the next album, it does seem to be imminent. The band has left their former home of Carpark records and signed with ANTI- who've released awesome albums ranging from Deafheaven, to Fleet Foxes, to James Brandon Lewis. On their new single, The Beths don't change up their sound too much, but when they've been so reliably good and consistent, there's no real need to alter the formula. "Metal," despite its name, is another bright and bubbly jangle-pop tune with ringing guitars and buoyant melodies that highlight singer Elizabeth Stokes' effervescent vocals. The song hits with a quick pace, but it never feels rushed or hurried and the sparkling guitar tones are a lovely pairing to Stokes' crystal clear and clean voice. There are moments when it feels like so much is happening in such a tight space, but then others when there's a clean break and the steady beat or shimmering guitar take hold revealing the complex yet enjoyable and pleasant sounds that this band can conjure up so well. It's a sweet and splendid welcome back.
