It's been four years since we got new music from The War on Drugs when they released deluxe edition of their last album I Don't Live Here Anymore. Today, Adam Granduciel dropped the one-off single, "Who's That," a song he says he wrote in about ten minutes before dropping off his kid at school. That's a pretty impressive ten minutes, I must say. While the new tune doesn't find the band exploring anything relatively new, it sure is nice to hear them return in pristine form. The heartland rock remains intact on this go around as rumbling piano leads the way before that smooth synth takes over and melancholic guitar weaves its way around the track. Granduciel is cooking on this one as the steady grooves gives way to kaleidoscopic guitar solo before all coming together in that glitzy, almost new wave sprawl that merge on to the sonic highway of dad rock that the band has perfected over their last several albums. Let's hope more is on the way!
