Modular synthesizer wizard and composer Jeremiah Chiu has gained recent acclaim for his work in the jazz quintet SML and as a rising figure in the scene, it's important to note his esteemed solo work and other collaborations as well. If you're unfamiliar, here's a good starting point: his new single "Plastic Mind / Elastic Machines" which features contributions from SML drummer and another ambient-jazz wonder Booker Stardrum. This one breaks from the jazz mold and moves much more in the electronic realm with rich textures and swaying melodies. According to the press release, "Edge Conditions is a feat of densely layered, tightly composed electronic music deviations in the vein of YMO spinoffs, Arthur Russell 12-inch mixes, Yasuaki Shimizu, classic Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, and Art of Noise." This one flutters with curiosity as it slinks over Stardrum's innocuous grooves, letting Chiu explore the musical terrain with an inquisitive approach. The guiding point for the rest of the album, Chiu notes that the song allowed him to construct songs that were more defined ensemble pieces instead of being driven by drums.
Edge Conditions is out October 9.
