"The last time we played Madison Square Garden it was the best night of our lives!" declared a fired-up Alana Haim on Monday night. "But I think tonight it gonna be even better!" she proclaimed and the crowd was ready to make due on that promise. While past performances may have hinted at more of their pop sensibilities with choreographed dance sequences, the I Quit Tour was all about rocking out and having the time of your life while doing so. As a jumbo sign listed off all of the things the band is quitting this go around, the world's most famous arena quickly roared with thunderous applause as the sisters made their way to the stage and slowly unveiled themselves as "Gone" rang throughout the room. Locked in and ready to go, the sisters wasted no time hitting us with their electric riffs and Danielle immediately started to shred while Alana and Este backed her up with their stunning harmonies and equally fitting chops. "All Over Me" was a sultry number that got the crowd even more fired up, but when they launched into the millennial-coded "Take Me Back," the night took flight and all systems were engaged. The aught-inflected jam packed twee and power-pop melodies under a righteous acoustic groove that was instantly nostalgic, but ultimately fresh and celebrated the band at the height of their powers before they dipped back into more classic material. "My Song 5" was an instant throwback that had the diehards lit up and ready to go, locking in with the trio and flipping our collective hair with the bombastic poptimist riffs. As their sound has matured with each release, "Cry" brought out the feelings and allowed Este to take control of the stage with the country-influenced tune that also brought back some killer Fleetwood Mac vibes with its familial tendencies. Alana grabbed some sunglasses out of the crowd for her moment of "Spinning," but they reconvened for a rad renditions of "Don't Wanna" that once again had everyone on their feet and chanting back at the band. After a bit of a sisters moment when Este revealed that shortly after the release of their debut album they caught Billy Joel at MSG and she said to her sisters how she hoped one day they'd be able to play the venue, a statement that reduced her to tears, before Danielle got behind the drum kit for a sinister take on "The Steps," Alana's favorite song to play live she informed us. From there, it was pure rock mode and the sisters were in tight formation as they laid things down with a vengeance, proving their swagger and skills in one fell swoop. They stripped things back for "Hallelujah, " a sweet and serene moment before they serenaded us with "Summer Girl," a song that always feels extra special in New York with its Lou Reed-esque sax solo making for the most special of moments and leading it directly into "Want You Back," was triumphant. With the crowd on their feet, the sisters were lined-up and in perfect unison as they rocked us with the dazzling hit. However, when they reemerged for the encore and went straight into "The Wire," the building began to shake as everyone gave in to the pure joy that was radiating from the stage. Peppered throughout the set were elements of Pop-Rock hallmarks of the '90s like Sheryl Crow, Melissa Etheredge, or anyone from Lilith Fair as well as more contemporaries like boygenius, Olivia Rodrigo, or an act from the All Things Go concerts which showcases their love and affection for songs you'd love to scream in a car with the windows down or in your bedroom turned up to 11. Regardless, the fun they have on stage is infectious and rippled throughout the entire room. Throughout the night it was clear that sharing the stage together is the greatest feeling in the world for all three sisters and bringing that to such a devoted audience is what they're made to do.
