The Besnard Lakes - "In Hollywood"

The Canadian space-rock unit returns with a soaring new track, "In Hollywood."

For years, The Besnard Lakes have excelled at making big-sounding rock epics that combine the swelling, wall of guitar sounds of shoegaze with the the rising post-rock ambition and the lead single from their forthcoming album, The Besnard Lakes are the Ghost Nation, is no different. Whirling walls of feedback and industrial-like drone meet steadfast drumming that keeps the song on a slow build, moving at a slow pace that really lets the sound ooze out while Jace Lasek's vocals follow along at a similar speed. When the song hits its sweet spot, the guitars become a bit more alive, flexing their muscular squall that gives the songs its powerful texture before it all unravels at the end. The song keeps the band's celestial atmospherics in place as it rockets towards the heavens, seemingly growing with a slight intensity as it picks up, but it never drops its weight. The restraint is crucial to the band's core sound and here they show it off in full force, never wavering or caving in for what could be something overblown. Instead they focus on their strengths and let them shine.
