While a lively jazz set on a rooftop with a picturesque view of the Manhattan skyline would've made for an ideal setting to see Fievel is Glauque, the packed and intimate vibes of Night Club 101 was no short coming and helped the music come alive with virtuosic playing and elated devotion from the crowd. The septet was tightly packed onto the stage and their sprawling line-up allowed for their effervescent jazz-pop to come to life with a sparkling fizz of ebullient joy. Spritely guitar licks mixed with the pairing of flute and saxophone gave the night a chic and sophisticated feel, while still remaining playful and downright fun. With each song being a rather short burst of a thought or idea, things moved swiftly, never dwelling on a motif, groove, or rhythm and instead highlighting some quick spontaneity that never over stayed its welcome. Breezing through their set, it was almost a blink and you could miss it type of show as each number went down fast and smooth, the band keeping things moving swiftly, yet still with a purpose. Keeping things a bit dark and moody, the ensemble made the room feel like the coolest spot in all of New York City with their knack for space-age pop grooves that took on a rather cosmic element without riding too hard on any forms of nostalgia. In their jazz, but not quite jazz jazz demeanor, the additions of proggy krautrock and notes of funk gave the night its texture and edge without striding too far from their core sound. As Zach Philips took on the role of band leader and conductor for the evening, vocalist Ma Clèment stood firmly at center stage, her slightly shy vocals drawing the audience in even closer as to not lose a single word or note from her velvety vocal work that gave the songs that extra something. As the two main forces of the group, Philips and Clèment have done a fabulous job enlisting players to help them bring these songs to life on stage and their ability to play off one another is one of the hallmarks of their live show. Whether its the Steely Dan inspired guitar riffs or the cool tones of the saxophone paired with the grounding bass and subtle percussion, these songs spring from the stage and the crowd was ready to receive their intended pleasures. Bubbling along with an enchanting groove, the retro-future stylings made for impeccable lounge music that made for a swanky and trendy evening. Never settling into one solid genre, the magical elements of the band and their singular sound can make them seem like the coolest act in the world, like a secret no one else has discovered quite yet and one you almost don't want to give away. Seeing them in such a small space was surely a bonus for this performance and helped reign in the feeling of something really special.
