After already releasing an EP this year, Blue Lake is making ambitious strides with the release of the forthcoming album The Animal due later this year. Our second taste of the record is the glorious track "Strand" which intensifies with extreme beauty as it swiftly takes shape. The lush arrangements swell with glowing satisfaction that give a triumphant feeling of a well oiled machine hitting its stride to deliver something great. Dungan said:
This started life as a guitar piece, and then when we played in Barcelona we did an unrehearsed version of it live, so it started to develop a band sound, and I continued to work on it. For the studio version of this, we did a live take, and the ending had quite a big crescendo as a climax. The producer Aske suggested doing an overdub on this final section, but with the whole band. I played the zither in the iso booth. This meant that the climax has both a rhythmic core and a looser, more open, slightly wild element as well. I really love what this piece does, and it is another that was only possible by recording in this studio - we could combine these elements in a way where they could retain their power but also their detail and delicacy. This track really took advantage of the studio - it allowed us to play as a large group, but also to bring together elements in a way that is decidedly unlike playing live.
The Animal is out October 3.
