Crystal Sting - "HD Umbrella"

The second single from Crystal Sting is here and it does more than double the duo's staying power.

Earlier in the year, the duo known as Crystal Sting made a splash with their excellent debut song "Octopus Project" which mixed classic IDM with what they affectionately referred to as cephalopod funk. It's quickly become one of my favorite songs of the year so far. Now, without much more news on the artists themselves, they've shared their second track and it's another throwback to early 2000s electronic music by way of folktronica and glitch-pop, but moves towards some more traditional electronic dance styles as well. Synths shine with glistening melodies as bouncing beats give the song an elastic rhythm. At first, it seems like they were in for more of the same, but a bustling breakbeat changes things up and flips the song on its head. There are nods to classic Four Tet moments on here too that clearly mark him as a deep inspiration to this majestic and moving sound. Vocals blend together as the beats move in pulverizing motions, but never do so in a way that goes too hard or makes for something extreme. Instead it's more "like getting caught in a rainstorm of glitter" rather than a total downpour and proves to be another noteworthy success.
