When Chat Pile announced their new album Who Loves the Sun, they dropped the record's lead single "Deep Blue" too. That song is a perfectly good, gnarly Chat Pile song. Today the band shared the second single and this one is a barnstormer that could just be one of their best songs yet. Hitting us like a blast of furnace heat, this is a bulldozer of a tune that clobbers you at every step of the way. Bruising bass line, jackhammer drumming, seething guitar, and some of the most guttural vocals we've ever heard from frontman Ray B. Bassist Stin shared that "PEN I S MALL" is "the heaviest Chat Pile song to date. The song and title refer to a stretch of time when Raygun [now known as Ray B.] was working as a maintenance man at one of the local shopping malls here in OKC. He screamed himself into a pretty brutal headache tracking this one, if I remember correctly." I'm pretty sure Stin is remembering this correctly because there's a moment in the song when Ray descends into a coughing fit and it could not sound more appropriate. The band has never sounded as fired up as they do on this number and it's an absolutely brutal track that rages hard and dishes out some of their most extreme songwriting to date. If the rest of the album even comes close to matching this intensity, it'll surely be one of the best of the year.
