Four albums in and New Zealand's The Beths have yet to lose their spark in writing sharp, effective pop-rock tunes and their new album highlights their latest collection of jubilant songs that leaves their crowd bopping along with unbridled joy. Opening with the title track from the new record, the group wasted no time in hitting us with the jams and their big hooks propelled the crowd all night long with limitless energy. "No Joy" continued the hype and lit things up with more infectious riffs and big-time melodies that crystalized in bombastic choruses and set up "Silence Is Golden" to grab the baton and carry on the marathon of hits. The band went back to "Future Me Hates Me" for the next song and the crowd went nuts for the classic tune that really helped to launch the band's popularity here in the states. After amping things up to their absolute peak, the band peeled back to let leader and namesake of the band Elizabeth Stokes take the spotlight for melting rendition of "Mother, Pray for Me," a moment that let her shine and made the audience go weak in the knees. Throughout the set, the band was locked in and their tight, witty grooves never missed the beat. Their prowess and skill top-notch and at times even felt like it could be slightly reserved, their real talents chomping at the bit and ready to take things to a new level. Another ballad that hit came when the band launched into "Jump Rope Gazers," a track from their back catalogue that still shines and really captures the moment. No matter how many future albums the band drops, they should never cut "Little Death" from their set lists as it will always be a highlight in not just their discography, but as a part of any show, its electrifying chords and melodies something that makes the band shine with their undeniable harmonies that magically fill the room. For nearly every song, the band brings out their vocal powers and unleashes them as a secret weapon that isn't captured for their justice on record. Stokes noted how it was exciting to be in New York for the holidays and wanted to help celebrate the season by playing a song that was also once sung by Ella Fitzgerald in the same room (according to her) and graced us with a cover of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" which made for a truly charming and special moment. Finishing off their main set with "Expert in a Dying Field" reinvigorated the energy after the holiday cheer and cemented the show as one full of rich highlights, euphoric choruses, and fruitful melodies that will never make for anything other than a wonderful night out.
