Florence Welch has an all-time voice, in case you are somehow unaware, and when she puts it to good use, she sounds unstoppable and larger than life. Think about just how massive a song like "Dog Days Are Over," "Shake It Out," or "You've Got the Love" can sound when they're played at the appropriate volume in front of a legion of fans. Think about how they can still hold that same power even if you're playing them alone on headphones. "Sympathy Magic," the third and final single ahead of her new album Everybody Scream, finds a similar groove, even if it's not as much of a pop banger. Sure, every time she sings, she commands the attention of the entire room, but there are also those times when she goes beyond, belts out towards the heavens and reminds you just exactly how powerful her range can be when she chooses to outdo herself. Over staccato strings and a building rhythm, Welch carries out a vocal performance that makes you wonder why this wasn't the lead single and is only something we're getting just days before the full release. Not that every amazing song on an album needs to be a single, but hearing this song it's nearly impossible to not feel the earth shake from beneath. Written with the National's Aaron Dessner and maximalist producer Danny L Harle, it may strike you as a strange combo at first, but when the song gels, it really stretches towards the stratosphere and you can imagine how these songwriters have founds new ways to explore Welch's powers. It's a swelling, bombastic track that you can imagine filling every corner of an arena as she blasts through the song with supreme, stunning power. There's magic in this one alright and everyone should be screaming with excitement.
Everybody Scream is out October 31.
