Fleshwater and Chat Pile played Brooklyn Steel

Fleshwater is on tour in support of their new album and Chat Pile are the phenomenal opening act that no one can afford to miss.

This coming Friday, Chat Pile are set to release their new collaborative album with Hayden Pedigo, but as of their current tour, they're still raging hard on all of their past material and making sure that everyone who comes to see their shows, still has the time of their life. Taking to the stage as one of the opening acts on Fleshwater's headlining tour, the incendiary sludge metal band made sure that everyone in attendance knew their name and brought the rage with their pulverizing sound and ruthless, brutal demeanor. Barreling right into their pummeling onslaught of carnage and punishing rhythms, the band was in fine form from the get go and proceeded to crush each song in their set with a stunning power. Frontman Raygun Busch's garbled vocals raged like a gravel pit turned into a ring of punishment, his brutal takes something that will surely grab hold and rock you to your inner core. Taking moments between each song to continue his excellent trend of discussing movies filmed in the city of the show, Busch named Spike Lee as his all-time favorite American director. The band's bruising attack was as strong as ever and sent shockwaves throughout the crowd as the pit grew larger by the moment, ever expanding and growing with intensity as each track took shape. "Why" captured the seething vibes of those in attendance who reacted to the astounding treatment of houseless folks in this country all at once serving as a way to expel rage while also raising the idea to those who may not get there on their own. The fusion of the band's brazen and uncompromising attack paired with their compassionate takes towards community is something to be admired and spread throughout the scene. Thrashing with such vigorous intentions, the band was poised for the occasion and ensured that each song rocked with absolute power. Taking his shirt off from the start, Busch danced across the stage with manic behavior as the band honed in with their gnarled rhythms and mangled melodies. "Wanna hear a new song about how much we hate ICE?" Busch asked at one point (it was clearly met with a rousing cheer from the crowd) and the band tore into another grizzled and turbulent track ready to raise hell. It's not often an opening act is the main event of the evening, but not everyone is Chat Pile and not everyone can be one of the best bands out there. Headlining the night was Fleshwater, a group that did more to channel the fashion and mentality of a Hot Topic trend that hasn't quite succeeded beyond their recorded content. Nu-metal influences mixed with Warped Tour punk made for an interesting time and their mega-riffs weren't as engaging in a live setting as they tend to be on record. Channeling the blast beats of emo combined with the sharp blasts of post-hardcore and metal, Fleshwater really launched into their most extreme and screeching traits that also leaned into a shoegaze mentality that didn't quite land. Sometimes the live thing isn't as great as the record and that sadly felt like the case here.
